Residents of the Magdalen Estate are being warned of a sophisticated scam that is being conducted by fraudsters, masquerading as officials from Wandsworth Council. The people involved have been targeting Wandsworth residents, calling them at home and stating either that the resident in question has over-paid on council tax and is entitled to a rebate, or that they owe money, having paid too little. In both instances, the caller then asks for bank account details and other personal information- such as date of birth- which then enables the people conducting the fraud to empty the personal account of the victim.
Although Trading Standards have been made aware that this is happening not only in Wandsworth, but also in other parts of the country, they are asking that people be on their guard for similar-sounding calls, and to never give our personal details on the phone. If you do hear of or experience anything suspicious, you can contact Trading Standards by calling 020 8871 7720 or by emailing email@example.com.
If you hear of any goings-on in and around the Magdalen Estate area that you’d like to let other readers and residents know about, please do get in touch, and we may be able to feature your story in our blog.Google+
