With so many Londoners finding that the cost of owning and maintaining a car is not worth the time they take to actually drive it, car club schemes like Streetcar– where members can book a vehicle for a couple of hours or longer-have really taken off around the capital.
On 31st January, a plan to increase the number of parking bays reserved exclusively for the keep of car club vehicles from 31 to 150 goes before Wandsworth Council’s executive, which, if approved, may well mean several residents of the Magdalen Estate and surrounding areas can retire their privately used cars from the road. If all goes smoothly, the used bays will be in place by the summer, to help keep up with the numbers of Londoners opting for car club membership, which has increased tenfold since 2007.
Transport spokesman Cllr Ravi Govindia told the Wandsworth Guardian “As the scheme expands it helps to reduce pressure on parking spaces, ease traffic congestion, cut exhaust emissions and saves our residents money”.
